Kristen Anderson

Kristen Anderson is a graduate of Trent University Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Chemistry and Bachelor of Education. She has been teaching secondary mathematics for 3 years. Kristen has been fortunate enough to have an interactive whiteboard (IWB) at her disposal from the beginning of her teaching career. For the past two years Kristen has partcipated in the lesson study program and in 2008 she and her Port Hope colleagues presented their lesson live at the Gain’s Conference in Toronto. In the past 3 years Kristen has also been developing and sharing interactive SmartBoard lessons. She has been involved in training her colleagues in the use and applications of IWB’s By posting all of her interactive lessons online, parents and students can use the lessons at home as a guide to homework and assignment completion.

Cathy Bruce

As Associate Professor at the School of Education and Professional Learning at Trent University, Cathy Bruce is the Head Co-ordinator for the Primary/Junior Mathematics Course. Her innovative research projects surround the topics of teacher efficacy, professional development and student achievement in mathematics. She has previously taught in the Primary, Junior, and Intermediate divisions, worked as a Mathematics Consultant with KPRDSB, and as a Resource Teacher with the Peterborough Board of Education. Cathy Bruce is the lead researcher for the Trent Mathematics Education Research Collaborative.

I am a graduate of the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics, Co-op Teaching Option, and from University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Education. I also received my Honours Math Specialist from Queen’s University. I have been teaching for 27 years at Port Hope High School. I was involved in a Lesson Study Project last year (2007-8) in a resource capacity only. I am currently involved (2008-9) in a Lesson Study project involving how students conceptualize the concept of volume through the use of Interactive Whiteboards and manipulatives. I recently won the North American Grand Prize for Secondary Smartboard lesson in the SMART Teacher Content Challenge and travelled to London, England to attend the BETT Conference (Educational Technology Conference). I have given numerous workshops on the use of the SMARTBoard in the secondary Mathematics Classroom. I have also been an associate teacher for many years.

Tara Flynn is a teacher-researcher with the Trent Mathematics Education Research Collaborative and research assistant to Cathy Bruce at Trent University’s School of Education and Professional Learning. Her research areas have included teacher professional development, including lesson study and collaborative action research, as well as the use of interactive whiteboards in mathematics classrooms.

A Graduate of Trent and Queens, Heather Hedges is a classroom teacher at Highland Heights Public School. She is currently involved in a Lesson Study project exploring how students’ ability to communicate mathematical thinking is improved through the use of Interactive Whiteboards and manipulatives. She is pursuing her MA in Mathematics Educations on a part-time basis at OISE/UT. Professional interests include teaching social justice through math and science, gender issues in math learning environments, and effective models of teacher collaboration. In the past she has worked for KPRDSB as a math resource teacher, and has been involved in various Ministry of Education initiatives.

I am (currently) a LTO teacher with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic
Secondary School board. I am part of the GAINs math project that our
board is doing on “Using IWBs to promote student centered learning”. I
am doing my ABQ in intermediate math and have chosen to to the action
research topic of “How can smartboards be used effectively in a math
classroom to improve concept attainment?”. I also use a Smartboard in my
science class and presented on the topic at STAO 2008.
